Artist? Struggling? 3 Creative Art Ideas to Make Money as an Artist.

So, You’re probably here because you want to make money in some creative way. Something that activates your artistic skills and your personal hobbies while giving you some extra money. At the same time, you want something interesting that nobody (or few people) are doing.

I am going to visualize 3 ideas for you: Embroidery projects, highly crafted designer book covers and colored electronics.

Part one will deal with Embroidery. (To see part two or three, click the links)

Embroidery As An Artform

Embroidery to me is one of the coolest crafts out there. Small and colorful threads become interesting patterns that people use on clothing and as decoration.

I don’t see very many people creating it as art. It’s a skill that takes time to learn but is a fun hobby and something that’s very high on my list.

The way to monetize it is similar to any other artistic endeavor, get really good at it, find your space within the skills and get it in front of people.

Get Really Good (but make money while getting good)

You can take online classes on places like skillshare and domestika, or buy easy to follow patterns from walmart.

When you finish a product, showcase it on a social page created just for that. Make videos that show you learning, that people can follow the journey with you, OR can do it while you do it by getting the same pattern as you.

You build an audience (which is a great YouTube channel idea, another money maker) and sell what you make by turning it into another product, like a pillowcase or wall hanging.

Find Your Space Within the Skill

As you can probably see from the photos, people have found their embroidery “niche.” A certain way that they present their art that people will come to recognize.

You can consider it  your own style. What your style will be depends on your interests and skills.

Maybe you’ll be known for embroidering famous propaganda posters or horses.

Whatever it is, I think the more complex, the more interest it generates.

For me, I love patterns so it would be fun to do some really complex ethnic patterns all in embroidery or to have machine embroidered wall paper (another business idea that I have, future video).

(which leads me off a side path, if you’re not interested in hand embroidery as a skill, machine embroidery is another way to see your creations come to life in a large-scale way. This would take a small investment and finding the right operator willing to work with you.)

Get In Front of People.

I mentioned this a bit previously but steps 2 and 3 you can do while you are getting good.

Create a social media page just for your craft, let people follow your journey on YouTube and Instagram.

In the very least, you begin getting the very important habit of putting yourself out there early, and even better would be to start to gain a following, even a small one full of people who give tips along the way that you can add to your videos.

So that when you get to where you want to be, there’s already an audience there for it, you don’t have to go looking.
