If you’ve ever wondered how people on Etsy or artists on Instagram can make money from being creative in this video you will discover a few ways.

So, You’re probably here because you want to make money in some creative way. Something that activates your artistic skills and your personal hobbies while giving you some extra money. At the same time, you want something interesting that nobody (or few people) are doing.

In part 2 I’m going to visualize handcrafted designer book covers. (To see part one or three click the links)

What Is It?

Next on the list are Handcrafted designer book covers. I know you’re probably thinking: what is this and can it really make money?

Well, in my travels I’ve seen a lot of improbable things make money. If well executed and in front of the right audience, sky’s the limit.

Put yourself where I was when I thought of this idea: in those designer home tours. They spend so much time carefully curating everything. Coordinating colors, patterns, materials, but then they get to the book shelf and the most they can do is turn the books backwards or organize them by color.

What if you were paid to find a solution? Customizable book covers are the solution. You get clients the color books that they want, the name written on the spine in a decorative way, or a patterned bookshelf!

We’ve all seen those book covers that you put over your textbooks in school, what about a higher end version of that.

Something leathery with gold embossed letters, or a more flexible but quality white fabric with a black minimalist letter design.

How about you make customizable peel and stick book covers, ones that can be removed at any time.

The ways to execute this idea and begin to make money from it are:

  1. Find what options are out there. Speak to a product designer or research similar products on Alibaba and see how you can make it more high end.

  1. Gather the materials and make different designs with the necessary equipment-this would be a test run.

  1. Put it on social media, take awesome pics of a perfectly designed bookshelf.

Show people their options: how they can keep the name of the book on the spine and choose the fonts, choose the colors, take them off, put them on, and the time and craftsmanship that go into it.

Create a downloadable magazine and a one page website to take online orders.

  1. Have an onboarding system, it can include taking the name and size of the book, and whether its hard cover or soft cover.

Give them a color pallet to choose from as well as designer fonts. Send them a sample for a book they have so they can see it in action before they do the rest of their books.

Because this one is labor intensive, you can charge more per book cover and the design process. I really think this is good for someone in the interior design industry who wants to focus on an often overlooked area.
